A new wave of creativity is rolling into Freeport—one anchored in the city’s rich maritime history and propelled by its vibrant imagination. Anchored in Freeport is the newest extension of the Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County’s (CAA) growing Art in Public Spaces program, which also includes the acclaimed Underwater Museum of Art, the Watersound® Monarch Art Trail, the U.S. Highway 98 Pedestrian Underpass Project, and a county-wide mural initiative.
In partnership with the City of Freeport, this innovative project will showcase a series of 4.5-foot concrete anchors, each transformed into striking works of art by local artists. Rooted in Freeport’s legacy as a historic port town, the project merges art, history, and community to celebrate the city's unique identity.
Inspired by the town’s history, the anchor symbolizes Freeport’s heritage, which dates back to 1830, when settlers were drawn to the area’s natural harbors as vital hubs for commerce and transportation.Through its custom-made, one-of-a-kind anchors, the Anchored in Freeport initiative aims to create a strong sense of place, bring together local businesses and residents, highlight the talents of area artists, and establish a welcoming environment for visitors and future residents.
The first four anchors—cast by Bill Roberts at Castaways—are currently in the hands of artists and will be painted throughout July at Estelle Grengs’ gallery in Freeport. Once complete, the finished anchors will be displayed at the Freeport Marina, while the next set of anchors begins their artistic transformation.

In August, the Marina will host a community celebration, offering a sneak peek at the completed anchors and a chance to support the installation through local fundraising. Event details will be announced soon.
This creative placemaking effort is about more than beautification. It’s designed to:
Honor Freeport’s maritime heritage
Strengthen community identity
Establish new cultural landmarks
Celebrate artistic expression
Draw both residents and visitors into the heart of a growing city
