The Cultural Arts Association of Walton County, Inc. is so fortunate to have Francis X. Pavy conduct an Art Block Printing Workshop on February 27, 2010 at the Point Washington United Methodist Church. This workshop has been coordinated with the organizers of Escape to Create in Seaside, Florida, where Pavy is a featured artist this year.
A lifelong resident of Louisiana, Pavy was born in Lafayette on March 2, 1954. As a child, Francis studied art under the direction of Elemore Morgan Jr.. In college he studied music, ceramics, animation, painting, printmaking and sculpture, graduating in 1976 with a fine arts degree in sculpture.
In 1977, Pavy started working in a glass shop, making leaded and beveled glass windows. In 1982 he opened his own glass studio. Pavy says of his time working with glass, “Designing glass had a great impact upon my later painting style. The linear quality of leaded glass design, dealing with flat planes of color, and the simulation of transmitted light were important elements I had in my vocabulary when I again approached painting.” He adopted painting as his primary medium in 1985 but works in many other media including prints, constructions, sculpture, glass, video and installation.
Francis Pavy's works vibrate with life, color and musical rhythm. Pavy’s work is populated by a eclectic mix of characters living in unusual places involved in passionate activities. The abstract dimension in his works are almost always grounded in southern motifs and culture. Pavy touches on many subjects in his work, including mysticism, love, loss and separation, humor, betrayal, friendship, loyalty as well as many other themes.
